Recalling dreams

I wonder why it is that often you can see all details of your dream that you just came out of which was either vivid or very detailed but you can't put it all into words? I often audio record my dreams, but just cannot get it all out of my head. I can see it all, but to record it or write it all on paper almost seems impossible.
